DMI's excellent thermal and chemical stability, its ability to dissolve inorganic and organic compounds and a variety of resins, as well as its catalytic action as an aprotic polar solvent, make it a particularly effective reaction solvent. With DMI, the yield can be increased and the side reaction can be controlled effectively under the premise of shortening the reaction time.
DMI can effectively promote a variety of nucleophilic substitution reactions, such as the synthesis of phenyl ether derivatives, amino compounds and fluorobenzene derivatives. Its high dielectric constant and solvation of cations can catalyze nucleophilic reactions of anions. These synthetic products are used as intermediates in the synthesis of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyes and monomers of high performance resins.
2 Petroleum Products
DMI has high boiling point and high thermal stability, and is not easy to form azeotrope with other substances, so it can be used in many industrial processes such as liquid-liquid extraction, countercurrent distribution, extraction distillation and countercurrent washing. DMI is a good extractant for BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) because it dissolves aromatic compounds and unsaturated hydrocarbons, but not alkanes.
3 polymer reaction solvent
DMI is a solvent suitable for the production of heat-resistant thermoplastic plastics. It can also be used effectively as a solvent in various polymer synthesis processes, and as a mold clearing agent in polymerization reactions and plastic molding processing. In the production of polyamide and polyimide resin, DMI can accelerate the formation of amide and imide groups to obtain high molecular weight polymer, the resulting solution is suitable for solution spinning, to obtain high temperature resistant polyimide fiber.
In the production of polyphenylene sulfide resin (PPS), electronic materials with minimal organic impurities can be obtained by DMI. In the production of polyphenylene ether sulfone resin, DMI can effectively control the occurrence of side reactions and obtain high quality polymer products. In the film forming process of polyimide resin and polysulfone resin as well as the extension processing of polyether ketone resin film, DMI treatment can make the film more uniform.
4. Lithographic stripping agent

5 Detergent
DMI is added to a mixture of surfactants, bases, alcohols, and polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers to produce a powerful detergent. Because DMI dissolves dirt easily, it can also be used to make an efficient cleaning solution for cleaning glass and metal.
6 Dyes and pigments

7 Surface treatment agent
DMI can be used as surface treatment agent to improve the bonding strength of ABS, polyimide, PPS, polytetrafluoroethylene and other materials with epoxy resin adhesive.
8 DMI and NMP(N-methylpyrrolidone)
DMI and NMP have similar structure, similar performance and application field, but there are significant differences in some performance:
A. Toxicity
Although NMP is a low volatile, low toxic solvent, but the latest research found that NMP has potential reproductive toxicity, some parts of the United States and Europe have restricted its use range, such as paint, graffiti cleaning agent, pesticide and other human body may be exposed to a large amount of NMP vapor use is prohibited. More stringent restrictions are likely in the future. No toxicity of DMI has been reported so far, which can widely replace HMPA(Hexamethylphosphoramide), a strong carcinogenic solvent.
B. Resistance to hydrolysis
Both NMP and DMI are lactam compounds. Because the amide bond is easy to hydrolysis, so the use of amide solvent conditions are limited, such as DMF high temperature (350℃) decomposition into dimethylamine and carbon monoxide, at room temperature will also be a small amount of decomposition; In the presence of strong alkali (such as KOH, NaOH, AcONa), the decomposition is rapid in the absence of water at room temperature, and may explode at high temperature. NMP is more stable than DMF, but it is also prone to decomposition under alkaline conditions (the decomposition of 4% sodium hydroxide is about 50-70% in 8h), and stable under acidic conditions. DMI reduces the dipole due to the conjugation effect of the structure of urea, which reduces the carbonyl reactivity. On the other hand, the five atoms on the ring are coplanar, so the nucleophile enters the ring to attack the carbonyl group less chance. Therefore, DMI is quite stable under high temperature and alkaline conditions and will not decompose quickly. Compared with NMP, DMI can be applied to the reaction under alkaline conditions.
C. Organic reaction
The pKa of the acid corresponding to the N atom on DMI is larger than that of NMP, which means that DMI is more suitable as a nucleophilic substitution solvent. At the same time, DMI has a higher boiling point and stability, suitable for the need to prevent solvent volatilization fields. At the same time, DMI has better solubility, no matter inorganic matter, organic matter, polymer can form a solution, so that the reaction system is uniform, and promote the reaction to proceed fully and quickly. In particular, DMI as the solvent can accelerate the reaction rate and yield of a large amount of metal salt (LiCl, CuI, etc.) as the catalyst.
